System Sound Check # 5- M'dears + Career Day @ St. Margaret Mary School + SQA Prom + Supreme Saturdays @ Funky Garcias
Last Saturday, held it down with Randy, Liz, and Greg Mack from 94.7 The Wave at M'dears in Lakewood for their date night function! And it was Liz's 1st time having Soul Food!
Was invited by the homie Jay Styles (Oh Yeah We Talk!/100.9 The Heat/97.1 AMP Radio) to roll with him to St. Margaret Mary School in Chino this morning for their Career Day. We talked to the middle school classes about careers in radio and music, and gave them some hands on work experience. As a product of the Catholic school experience, I had flashbacks of being that age, making mixtapes by taping songs off the radio and banging on lunch table rapping with classmates. Talk about full circle. The kids had mad energy and wonder and a joy to have conversations with. Plus, I talked to them about the importance of using headphones, how not to commit "train wrecks" and wore a De La Soul shirt doing it all.
Last night, I was once again rocking with Synergy Quantum Academy, this time at the Bilmore Hotel for their Senior Prom ! Was pulling out crazy blend ideas tonight that got double takes: try an "Ayo" remix with vocals from RiRi's "BBHMM" on it, to Celia Cruz's "La Vida Es Un Carnaval" to Drake's "The Motto." Hip-Hop, Pop, RnB, Latin, Alternative, everything AND the kitchen sink. That's how HFP Sound System do. Thank you again to everyone (Wud up Matt Duncan?!)!
And at the same time last night, about hour and a half down the coast, Lord was holding it down at Funky Garcia's in the Gaslamp District in San Diego with the homie DJ Cutlos Supreme for his "Supreme Saturdays." When I texted him this morning asking how things went if he has any pictures from last to share with you all, his response back to me was "Unfortunately nah. Shit was so turnt up last night, lol!" Goes to show you, when HFP is in your town, this is what to expect, lol!
Live Thursday in Huntington Beach at HB High with the K-Earth 101 promo team and morning show host Gary Bryan spinning for the opening night of Retrofest: An Evening at Madame Wong. If you don't know the story of Esther Wong and her club, it's must a read. It was pretty much the west coast equivalent of CBGB. These kids did a hell of job not only recreating the vibe of the club, but put on a full scale concert honoring that era of music.
As for my DJ set, I got a chance to channel a little bit of Richard Blade and Rodney Bingenheimer: Devo, Blondie, Talking Heads, Ramones, Human League , Depeche Mode, Cheap Trick, The Runaways, The Go Gos, The Police, Duran Duran, The Cure, The Knack, Oingo Boingo, New Order, Thomas Dolby, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Tears For Fears, Guns N Roses, Pet Shop Boys, and lot more Rock, Punk, and New Wave from the late 70s to late 80s. Most of those bands actually played at the venue.
Was kicking Saturday night with the cool kids from John Burroughs High School in Burbank for Mai's Sweet 16 function! Thank you having me out to spin some jams for ya'll. Thank you to big sister Mindi for making it happen, love to the whole Rengrudkij family for your amazing hospitality, and special shouts out Lisa Fayth of Astro AVL for linking us up. You're always looking out for a brotha lol!
The Honor Flow Productions Radio channel is now available on Jango.com! Turn it up and bump it worldwide!
Spinning jams for the homegirl Dai's husband, Kevin's dirty 30 birthday! Craziest part to me (and maybe the most humbling) was at the end of my set, me throwing the instrumental to "This That Jam" as walk out music and Kevin and his homies boogie'n to it and tell me to keep that beat going. I nervously ended up mixing in the full song. When I told them it was my shit with my crew, they told me "run that shit back again." It almost got played 3 times in a row but we had to vacate the party space. Elimn8 and Lord, I think we have a hit on our hands.
Thank you Durfee Elementary and Middle School for having me spin for your 50th Anniversary carnival! Such a variation of great talent out there. Shouts out to Brandon of the K-Earth 101 Morning Show for linking me in this function.
"A jonz in my bones and a high of nirvana/Still feel it everytime I step in my Honda."
Played a couple of jams at Honda headquarters in Torrance for a great cause; the 'Ride For Kids", raising money to find a cure for pediatric brain cancer.
"Not mainstream or underground, just a dope sound... Live Loud, Dream fearless."
