1) 94.7 The Wave's Soulful Summer
The Greek Theatre was on fire and live as hell for 94.7 The Wave's Soulful Summer Vol. 2!!! Because this all 90s R&B Royalty on the bill, my set reflected that; felt like a kid again spinning all those jams. Everyone was on their A+ game that night: Troop, SWV, Ginuwine, Toni Tony Tone, and Blackstreet! I saw Blackstreet sound check earlier that day and I was presently surprised when I heard that talkbox and saw "The King of New Jack Swing" himself, Teddy Riley, was back with the group. Yoooo, let me say that again... Teddy fuckin Riley was on stage that night and ran a fucking clinic lol!
Wreckx-n-Effect and Kool Moe Dee made appearances in Teddy's medley that covered damn near all his hits: Guy, Bobby Brown, Michael Jackson, Johnny Kemp, Doug E Fresh and Slick Rick, and countless others. Of course Don't Leave Me and No Diggity were in the set list. I was partying my ass off in the front row with my co-worker Claudia after I wrapped up DJing for the day lol! Incredible show and I must say, it felt like '95 again in that piece... Fly girls with hoop earnings and Ice Cube a couple rows next to me in the crowd lol!
Was rockin' on beach pier in Huntington Beach with for the Fourth of July with K-Earth 101. Spun 70s and 80s jams with hint of 60s Soul. The weather called for that mood in music and it was absolutely gorgeous out here. I hope all of you did yourself a favor before the fireworks that night and ran in the sun for a little.
To quote Magic Johnson in those old promos that use to play before every flick in the theater I was playing right in front of, "You can do it in your own community. I know I will." I really enjoyed spinning jams at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza for the "Crenshaw Healthfest" Important to bring this information and these services to the neighborhood. And to see everyone really enjoying the tunes.
Personally, it was it was a blast from the past. You have to understand, I was over looking my old junior high, St. Bernadette while DJing a spot I used to hangout at with my friends from that time, at an event pretty much powered by Loyola alumni. P. Mac ('06) organized it for Councilman Sebastian Ridley-Thomas ('05), Ham ('06) was on the photography, and yours truly ('06) on the decks. Full circle I tell ya. Aside from the gig itself, my favorite moment of the day is when we spent about 2 hours after catching up and the conversation turned to an in-depth music discussion. Some things never change. "Round Table" 10 Year Reunion next year Key and Fyffe.
Spun spinning jams and thangs in front of the newly christened Microsoft Theater with 94.7 The Wave promo squad before Frankie Beverly and Maze graced the stage. A lot of OG two-steppin' was going down in the LA Live plaza that night.
Ya know... spinning jams and spittin rhymes in the homie Rhys Langston's backyard. A backyard boogie function on a 2LA day with body painting by the homegirl Kanary Fox. Shouts out to Spiritwave from The Bay and Ubiquitous Love Tribe for rocking with us that day. Shit, even had some extra time on our hands in between artists and me DJing. So @elimn8HFP and I, at the spur of the moment, rocked a couple joints from Boombox Sketches; with me rapping and DJing "at the same damn time" (c) Future, lol! Expect footage from this show in a future episode of HFP TV.
Spun jams and thangs at The Parlor for Ad Relief. Shouts out to the homie Chad Peppars for bringing me in the mix for this one. Even after the gig, sung a song or two at their Karaoke night. And now for you enjoyment... videos of both my numbers are posted below, lol!
True story. Their first "date" was an HFP show almost 5 years ago at The Roxy; our 1st self-produced concert entitled "F.R.E.S.H. State of Mind." 5 years later, DJisLORD and I were requested to help "finish the job" lol! An unforgettable night in San Diego for more reasons than one. Congratulations and thank you to Alexis and Andrew!!! It felt like another mini LMU reunion.
