DJing 16 out the 30 days in September? Sure, why not.
1) 94.7 The Wave @ The Los Angeles County Fair
I had a mini residency going on this year at The LA County Fair in Pomona with The Wave. We brought our vibes out to warm up the fair audience before acts such as Charlie Wilson, Chaka Khan, Patti Labelle, War, Kool & The Gang, Bell Biv Devoe, Ginuwine, and Tony! Toni! Tone! graced the Fair's Race Track stage. Never a dull moment among the fried foods and ferris wheels.
Now to my other radio "residency." Another month of every Wednesday night keeping stomachs full and feet happy at The Outlets At Orange for Food Truck Haven. You know the deal already. Come have a plate and come vibe out with us on the classic gems and jams tip.
3) Patrick and Raquel's Wedding
"We're not getting old, we're getting better."
It's a pretty wild concept that my life is becoming like a Marvel Comics storyline now in that friends of mine from different eras of my life are now all connected. It's like the ultimate crossover issue.
That day, one of my best friends from high school married a fellow communications major classmate of mine as DJisLORD and I supplied the soundtrack like we always do. I always feel honored (no pun intended) when my friends call and entrust HFP to be a part of their function; because most of these people (in particular this bunch), are A-1 since day one and knew me before Honor Flow even existed.
It also became a mini reunion of "The L Hip-Hop Round Table," one year short of our 10 year anniversary of our pre-graduation discussion. All we were missing was Key and Hank (R.I.P. Brotha).
"I don't have friends, I have family." (c) Vin Diesel. True story. That night was a nice reminder of that.
Congrats P and Raquel!
Held it down in the heat, while bring the heat on the 1s and 2s, surrounded by Hot Wheels for two days in Ontario for the 2015 Cruisin Reunion. Beside some of the hilarious yet thirsty cougars and this lovely group shot of the promo squad, this story below I re-accounted on my Facebook page is what I will remember about this event...
"While spinning for K-Earth at "Crusin' Reunion" in Ontario today, I noticed a kid standing next to our booth watching me DJ. I took off my headphones and started talk to him. His name was Victor (A good name to have I told him as that is my middle name), and he told me he had always been interested in becoming a DJ because his father was one.
Being that he was 14, and I received my first set up at 15, I told him it was a perfect time to start up. I asked him if his father had showed him any techniques. He told me no because he didn't know him; the older gentlemen that accompanied him was his foster father. I asked my co-worker to pass me his ear buds and hook them into my mixer's second headphone jack to let Victor listen in on my next blend.
I walked him through the basic steps of a transition (It was Marvin Gaye's Got To Give It Up to Eurythmics' Sweet Dreams) BPM, scratching, pushing the record etc. His eyes lit up like a fire was sparked in him. After I turned to his foster pops asked him "So when are you getting him his first set up?" I shook Victor's hand and told him "I'll see you in the clubs in a couple years."
The reason why I'm telling this story is to ask a favor of my fellow DJs: if you are ever at a gig and a youngin' is studying you, if you can spare a minute, pull them up to the decks and show them a little something. We are always having that conversation within our community about what is "Real DJ," so the best way to make sure the art form continues to progress in a positive direction is that we pass down our skills and knowledge to the next generation"
5) KGPR X Rich Dragon Talent Agency Showcase
I landed the gig to be the house DJ for Rich Dragon Talent Agency and KGPR's talent showcase at Couture in Hollywood. Backed a couple very talented vocalist as they auditioned for a residency opportunity in China. Peace to everyone I connected with. Many a funny story that went down at this one that I will save for that book one day.
Maaan listen... K-Earth Promo and I were getting busy that night at LA Artwalk. Straight Pop Party business... Set up right inside the Surf Pig and took it around the world and back musically. Shouts out to the all artists food trucks, and party people in the place to be. Thank you for your energy. That's how we do.. Block Party status. Take it straight to the people lol!
1nce again linked up with the homies ALTEREDCHANGE to rock it at The Airliner with Yung Miss for Flow and Tell 10. Nicklez even represented in the freestyle battle. The energy was live as hell.
Oh and my favorite act to watch tonight? The Muzes. These chicks can bust and have a dope ass live show! Look em up and give em a spin.
It was a family Sunday funday in Chatsworth K-Earth Promo for their annual Family Festival. Morning Show host Gary Bryan quizzed listeners with trivia for prizes and it was a Hoola Hoop battle for Six Flags tickets.
Favorite moment of the day? A 10 year old girl bustling the "Hammertime" #Hammertime as I mixed Rick James' "Super Freak" to MC Hammer's "You Can't Touch This." Her mother taught her right lol!
Plus, shout out Galpin Ford for our Fast and Furious flick with this 2015 Mustang. Aye, Vin Diesel... do we have a shot at Fast and Furious 8?
Finally, it was another wild Saturday night at @The Federal Bar. There was no warm up period for that crowd; they were dancing from record # 1. Much love to everyone that came out and rocked with us. Thank you Jaycru and B-Mix aka Coldfusion Live for letting me set off the night.
